If you've been waiting for a valuable, highly integrated, mature cloud computing product, Oracle's public cloud is the muse you've been looking for.

At the Oracle OpenWorld Conference in San Francisco, the company launched the service to include three levels commonly used in the cloud computing model, the first of which is infrastructure as a service (IaaS), where users can buy a run on Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle VMS 3.0 virtual machines in virtual environments. The second is the platform, a service (PaaS), in which users can buy WebLogic application servers and an Oracle database in the name of Fusion middleware. The last software as a service (SaaS) allows users to buy three applications: Fusion CRM, a Human resources application Fusion HCM, and a new collaboration tool called social receptacle.

Oracle has so far appeared sluggish in its cloud-computing offerings. But the company says it is now rolling out sophisticated cloud computing services after years of hibernation, as the company's findings show that users are ready to implement cloud computing. When respondents were asked whether they were interested in building a private cloud, 28.6% of Oracle users agreed in 2010, and in 2011 the data reached 37% (up 28%). In the area of public cloud promotion, 13.8% of respondents in 2010 expressed interest, while in 2011 the data reached 20.9% (growth rate of 50%).

How much cloud computing is the Oracle public cloud?

The industry's biggest surprise in the Oracle public cloud announcement is that these services lack support for multi-tenant functionality. Oracle executives claim that each user can obtain a separate virtual machine and database to ensure isolation between the user's corporate database and other user databases. This immediately raises the cost issue, and cloud computing is primarily about reducing operating costs through shared data storage and shared application patterns. Oracle does not provide any pricing information on its cloud computing services, but it is estimated that its expected price may be high.

For the sake of clarity, the National Association for Science and Technology (NIST) has defined cloud computing as: pooling the computing resources of suppliers, using multi-tenant models, dynamically allocating and reallocating physical and virtual resources to serve multiple customers according to customer needs. Oracle must have overlooked this academic definition.

Oracle has been tight-lipped the details of its PAAs products, but it seems that it does not yet have the most basic functionality of the platform, the service product: the ability to automatically scale scaling.

The Oracle Public cloud registration process also does not fully conform to the true cloud services logo. It is a combination of monthly and Pay-as-you-go models. Before you start using the service, you must submit your application and wait for the voucher via email before you can log in. It sounds like the original Oracle mode on demand.

In addition, Oracle's Fusion middleware is the same as the products sold by local cloud computing, while the Oracle Public cloud programming model uses the same computer programming language based on development standards, including Java, BPEL, and network services. So scheduling workloads becomes straightforward.

Oracle Cloud computing products have mixed reactions

At this conference, Oracle's users reacted differently to the new service. Some say it will help simplify the deployment of Oracle applications, which have traditionally been overly complex and cumbersome and difficult to manage. But others say cloud computing systems based on Oracle Exadata and Exalogic are just a "mainframe cloud" rather than a real cloud.

Robert Shimp, vice president of Oracle's group, disagrees with the latter and says that in the future, "all corporate clouds are built on engineering systems rather than simply piling up x86." Over time, that seems like a crazy and bad idea. ”
