Beautiful cloud computing is not perfect

Over time, the DOE has tested the ability of several cloud vendors to run special applications. One official said the test results from the first Energy Department's Magellan Cloud computing platform showed that commercially available commercial cloud services were susceptible to the use of the message-passing Interface (MPI), such as weather, for computing applications.

The Messaging Interface (MPI), which is sometimes convenient for communicating synchronously between parallel processes, can also facilitate communication mechanisms and ensure that the program retains the same effect in its particular domain. Also, it is easy to have extensive control in a parallel environment. The Department of Energy carries out weather forecasts and other chemical studies in the Messaging Interface (MIP) application. The tests point out that while cloud computing is full of good fantasies, the reality is that cloud services are still subject to many logical and physical limitations.

This result confirms some of the effects I had on cloud computing a few years ago, including the fact that not all applications are suitable for cloud computing. After that, cloud computing providers did not define and optimize specific applications, including MPI. This does not mean, however, that cloud computing is slow and unacceptable, and that they are slow and unacceptable in a particular field or a particular method.

In fact, the Department of Energy has also found a sequential set of instructions, such as genome sequencing, that "has little or no performance attenuation". From the cloud service provider's point of view, MPI performance problems can also be reduced. However, I wonder if this can be completely eliminated, especially when considering the use of public cloud architectures.

The core issue is that public clouds, especially those that provide infrastructure and platform services, support the creation of common applications by cloud providers when special requirements arise, especially when MPI applications are thrown at them. is not able to fully understand their limitations.

The bottom line is that all applications are not the right "cloud", and application software, communications and services are clearly divided. Of course we have to make strides towards cloud computing, but we also need to recognize the limitations and opportunities that it brings.
