Beware of blog comments and web mail with malicious code

Secure Computing warns people that blogs, message boards and web mail are now being harassed by a spam message inviting people to watch "interesting" videos. Secure Computing found a variety of sites containing storm worms. The worm installs components on the user's computer, analyzes all network transmissions through a tiered service provider (LSP) alliance, and dynamically modifies blog comments, message boards, and web mail to include links with malicious code to continue to spread. "This is a sign of the new trends in malware that spreads through blogs, message boards, and web mail," says Dmitri Alperovitch, chief researcher at Secure Computing. "Since antivirus software does not necessarily detect this threat, it seems particularly covert." The threat uses server polymorphism, which means that it is continually reconfigured to deceive those authentication-based antivirus schemes. "Because it keeps changing executables, it can easily avoid most of the most advanced antivirus programs that are based on authentication technology."
