Beijing time October 22, according to the Wall Street Journal Chinese online edition, activists and security analysts said Apple Inc. (AAPL) icloud services in mainland China were attacked and attackers could intercept and see user names, passwords and other personal data. Reports indicate that the identity of the attackers is unknown, and experts say the source of the attack cannot be determined. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Concerns about icloud's services in China began to emerge over the weekend when skilled Chinese netizens, after seeing their internet browsers warn, questioned the online discussion group that the icloud server's communication with Chinese users could be hijacked. Chinese internet activist Zhou, who lives in Taiwan, tested the servers and found that communications between icloud users and icloud servers had been intercepted by attackers using man-in-the-middle tactics. In addition, Erik Hjelmvik, an analyst with Netresec AB, a Swedish network security software provider, said in Tuesday that he had assessed the data published online by Chinese internet users and had come to a similar conclusion. Hjelmvik said it was clear that the attack was large. He says hackers have the ability to attack users in different parts of China, who use different internet providers. He said the attack was very complex and that they had apparently built a huge system for such a massive interception. Analysts say the attack means unauthorized individuals or organizations will be able to decrypt the content of communications between icloud users and servers. This may cause the user name, password, file, picture, and contact person of the icloud user to be seen in an unencrypted manner.
