In the morning of October 19 in Beijing, Rim unveiled the BlackBerry BBX system at the BlackBerry DevCon Americas Developer Conference, consolidating the best features of the BlackBerry platform and the QNX platform to achieve integration between people and devices, content and services.
BBX is designed to provide a powerful real-time mobile experience. The platform will contain BBX operating systems and support BlackBerry cloud computing services as well as HTML5 and local application development environments. BBX will also support all applications developed using BlackBerry Playbook tablet tools, including the native SDK (software Development Kit), Adobe Air/flash, WEBWORKS/HTML5, and BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps.
BBX will also include a new BlackBerry Cascades user interface framework to enable high-end graphical display capabilities, as well as a "Super app" feature that enables deep integration between applications and functions such as push services and BBM social platforms.
Developers who want to support existing smartphones (running BlackBerry 6 and BlackBerry 7 operating systems) and playbook tablets can generate revenue through BlackBerry WebWorks, which also supports apps developed through HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. The latest BlackBerry Web Works SDK 2.2 (which also supports smartphones and tablets) is now available and includes upgrades to the new Playbook OS SDK, Playbook Simulator, and more.
The BlackBerry WebWorks API (Application programming Interface) is supported by Ripple emulator. The latter is a browser-like high-fidelity simulation tool that allows developers to test and debug applications across multiple platforms and devices without compiling or running emulators.
