BEIJING, December 8 (AFP)--British Prime Minister Gordon Brown 8th also called on European countries to commit to further cuts in greenhouse gas emissions at a time of global concern for key climate talks in Copenhagen. In an interview with British media, Mr Brown said he hoped that by 2020 the EU would agree to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30% rather than the 20% previously agreed. In Monday, European Union countries met in Brussels, Belgium's capital, and proposed that the EU should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, as the international community could reach an agreement at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. However, there is still disagreement among the European Union on the proposal. In France, Britain and other countries keen to cut emissions, the report said, Poland and other Eastern European Member States were not committed to heavy reliance on polluting coal-fired power generation. "We must convince nations that they must be as ambitious as they claim they want to be," Mr Brown said. Brown pointed out, "Just say ' I may do this, I can do it, maybe I will do this ' is not enough," he hopes to persuade EU countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. The report argues that Mr Brown has been unable to suggest that the EU should further reduce its carbon footprint, whatever the outcome of the Copenhagen climate summit. But Mr Brown points out that a further reduction in the EU's carbon footprint would be "a signal that the world will change its mind and agree to an ambitious agreement". On the afternoon of December 7, a landmark climate change summit opened in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, with representatives from 192 countries and regions attending the summit. Countries have sought to reach a new agreement on a greenhouse gas reduction plan to deliver a "hope for a better future" to the world, and hope that this "wasted opportunity" will point the way for future cuts in the human race.
