For Microsoft, Mr Schmidt's remarks were no different from the gauntlet. The traditional software installed on a computer is fundamental to Microsoft, and its officials believe that the idea of a 90% computing task moving to a web-based "cloud computing" environment is a fantasy.

Lex, the head of Microsoft's corporate sector, said it was wrong to compare the current market with the future market. In the eyes of Lex, the Google Challenge is misguided and arrogant in its attacks on Microsoft. Google is focused on its own interests, it is to weaken Microsoft, not to meet customer demand.

Lex points out that Microsoft has spent years on product development and customer research and invested billions of of dollars in studying the way employees and businesses use software. Indeed, Microsoft's advantage lies in its huge lead in the Office software market. Industry analysts say Google cannot compete directly with Microsoft in the area of desktop software. Desktop software is transforming into Web software.

Analysts point out that Google is a completely different competitor than the other rivals Microsoft has overcome in recent years: it is bigger, faster, financially strong and attractive to talent. Google's "cloud computing" technology is open. The data center, designed by Google's engineers, has an advantage in terms of energy efficiency, speed, and cost, enabling it to add computing power at a very low cost.
