Recently, according to foreign media reports, last autumn, Finnish designer Chorilaro (Jori Lallo) and Kari Sharinin (Karri Saarinen) have launched a browser bookmark named Kippt, which is designed to allow users to store their information in a more elegant way on the web. At that time Kippt was just an amateur project, because the main focus of Rarotonga was on the application Convore of the message board. Over time, however, the two-bit founders supplemented and integrated some new features for kippt and introduced an API (application programming interface) that allows users to modify the extension or create their own applications using the Kippt tool.
Recently, two founders began to devote all their energies to this bookmark application. They want kippt to change the way people collect, share, and discuss links and online information, not just a bookmark application. The new version of Kippt, unveiled last week, shows that they have embarked on a new phase of the vision: Kippt from a simple tool into a collaborative service where users can collaborate to create lists, add comments, and share them openly in kippt communities. One industry personage said: "How kippt will develop, it is definitely worth our attention."
Create "linked GitHub"
The company also announced last week that it would participate in the 2012 summer incubation course for Y Combinator. While YC's resources and funding can help kippt scale up and build its own products, Rarotonga says Kippt users have asked them to provide more collaboration and social functions from the outset. So they don't want to wait until YC Demo day to release new collaboration tools, and they want users to use it as quickly as possible.
Kippt users can save links, organize them into simple lists, and collaborate with colleagues to collect bookmarks and content clips, and these shared content can also be searched. In this way, bookmarks and productivity tools like kippt and delicious, Pinboard and Evernote, are quite similar. However, this is only the initial focus of KIPPT, its long-term goal is actually much more ambitious. ' What Kippt wants to do for the link is what GitHub (the well-known developer community, the most popular open source hosting service) does for the code, ' says Rarotonga. That is to say, make bookmarks truly socialized.
Competitors are email and wiki
Although delicious and Evernote may be Kippt's name rivals. But Rarotonga argues that Kippt aims to change the way people collect and share links, and its real competitors are e-mails and wikis.
Competing with email is a daunting task, but Rarotonga believes that the best way to do this is to create a utility-type collaborative application (think of Google Docs), so that teams can express their views quickly and easily, discuss links and lists, save links and changes, and more.
With the Kippt new collaboration list feature, you can have other people join your list so they can share or add new clips and invite other users to join, so kippt is very useful for teamwork. In emails and chat rooms, discussions tend to get slow and noisy, so kippt, like Yammer, adds comments that allow users to open a clip and comment on it without having to discuss it back and forth in a inbox.
Other features of the new version
With the new kippt, users can also create public lists and clips, use the improved read later feature, switch to "read later" status for any clip (from which list to save from clips), and modify clips.
In order to "maintain development and make some coffee money", Kippt also launched the "Advanced Account" option, the price of 25 U.S. dollars a year. It can provide users with advanced features, such as indexed user-imported clips, making it easier to search, and so on.
The kippt extension supports all major browsers, plus new collaboration features and APIs that provide a variety of use cases for individuals or groups, jobs or families, while maintaining stunning design and usability. But Rarotonga also says that as kippt grows, it has a long list of features to add (most of which involve social and clip management).
