While Intel is grumbling about servers with ARM processors, the upstart-server chip maker Calxeda in the processor arena will not give Intel Sole power over the word. They must build an ecosystem of hardware and software partners who believe that Low-power 32-bit ARM server platforms can occupy a niche in the data center.

To achieve this, Calxeda (previously the company's name was Smooth-stone) launched the "Pathfinder action", a team of 10 software companies will support the Calxeda based on the upcoming ARM system chip design server.

Calxeda ARM's super partners include autonomic resources, Canonical, Caringo, Couchbase, DataStax, Eucalyptus Bae, Gluster, Momentum SI, Opscode and pervasive.

Of course canonical is the initiator of the commercial release of the Ubuntu Linux operating system, and today they are the first to join the team as a Calxeda arm server operating system choice.

Eucalyptus BAE can provide a copy of the application programming interface software and a cloud framework for Amazon's flexible computing cloud operations. Canonical is Eucalyptus's ardent fan, but their movements lag behind the OpenStack cloud framework (originally NASA and Rackspace hosting for computing and storage clouds), and they are close to the open source community.

Microsoft is not one of the Calxeda software companies, but it will be an interesting situation if it becomes possible. Carl Calxeda, vice president of marketing. In an interview, Fred said the chipmaker was building its business plan around the Linux system. "Microsoft has not yet made any comments on Windows Server that has the ARM processor configured," But Fred also thinks "it would be great if Windows could join, and we would be very happy".

Opscode is primarily used for automated cloud operations, autonomic Resources is a cloud provider for U.S. government users, Caringo and Gluster primarily from cloud and cluster storage. Couchbase main membase Server NoSQL database, DataStax mainly engaged in Cassandra distributed database at the top of the use of Hive query language for large-scale data analysis.

Pervasive company in the past mainly engaged in the commercialization of PostgreSQL databases, now they are based on the Btrieve (called Psql) database and named Datarush Data integration and analysis of product sales. Momentum Si sells a wide range of proprietary cloud Automation extensions for load-balancing and VMware-Vcloud director or Eucalyptus frameworks.

Fred: Cloud and large data

"Our greatest opportunity lies in the cloud and the big data," says Fred. Someone recently said, ' Forget about the arm server ', we can say so please pay attention to these companies. They all have confidence in the potential market for ARM servers, and combined with ARM's professional experience, all this will be a breeze.

The Calxeda ARM processor is based on the modified design of CORTEX-A9 from arm holding company, and there is no official name.

But in March this year, as Intel began to promote the Xeon micro-servers, Seamicro was also promoting their 64-bit hyper-density server chassis, and the Calxeda company was unable to keep up with the release of some of its future processor features. The latter integrates 512 cores in the 10U chassis and is competitive in load balancing and network interconnection architectures that connect 256 server nodes together.

The performance of each tile is also a leading attempt. Calxeda employs the CORTEX-A9 core, which provides only 32-bit memory addressing capabilities and can be configured at the top of quad-core servers. The processor has an integrated DDR3 memory controller and a self-developed interconnect architecture that connects nodes together.

For 4GB RAM, memory controllers, and interconnect architectures, Calxeda says they can control the thermal encapsulation power of the entire server node within 5 watts. We suspect that the Calxeda processor's frequency should be between 1GHz and 2GHz, but Calxeda did not disclose the target of their clock frequency.

"Thousands of cores"

We know that Calxeda is designing an interconnected architecture that connects thousands of cores, not by caching, but by more focused on connecting server racks or clusters or multiple server racks on the cloud. The initial Reference architecture should be to integrate 120 server nodes (i.e. 480 cores) into the 2U chassis.

Calxeda's super partners will be the first to use the hardware, which is expected to meet them at the end of the year.

Calxeda does not say exactly when the processor will be used for commercial release, or that the company will be responsible for making a system that carries chips on its arm system. But Fred says every partner who promises to build a system will have a large number of real users who can experience a model with an ARM processor by the end of the year.

Calxeda is not worried that Intel is expected to launch a 20-watt and 15-watt "Sandy Bridge" to strong processors and market plans and a Xeon processor that consumes more than 10 watts in 2012. Note, however, that this is the energy dissipation of the individual processor.

According to Calxeda, given the current situation of large amounts of cloud and large data workloads, it is not feasible to decompose workloads into nodes, and in contrast, Google is making people believe that.

In fact, Fred overturned this assertion and said that large-scale work development, using a large number of Calxeda processor Cluster Server will be the Xeon server cluster energy efficiency of five times times.

"Users will have their own choices and we can maintain this significant advantage," says Fred.

You can see why Intel is now overturning its routing plan for the 1 watts to 10 watts in May, and has redesigned its low-power-driven processor. It's nothing to do with netbooks. Regardless of what Intel is backwards to attract users, the more aggressive product roadmap for a moving processor is necessary to compete with ARM servers.
