Case study: Logo Design System method
Logo design is very time-consuming, because it is difficult to express our design concepts and meet the needs of our customers. There are many elements in logo design that you need to consider, such as color, font, balance, symbolism, and so on. So how do we get started? Today, I'm going to show you a systematic approach to designing logos to make your logo coherent, logical, constructive, and creative.
First you have to communicate with customers to understand what brand they want to create. For example, your client is a stock brokerage company "Petra Capital", they want to design a clean, collaborative sense of the logo, hoping to pass the logo to the outside world to convey the company's very professional image. How to design it?
1. Research
First, we need some background research, using >google to study the customers ' competitors, to see what their branding is like and what style they are using. It's a great way to use a competitor's case for inspiration and heuristics, but we want to make sure that we give our customers unique logo designers, so the research must be meticulous and make a lot of comparisons.
Then we have to do some research on clients, study their business models, study their products, their business models. Finally I found Petra capital specializing in mining stocks, Petra "in Greek means" rock ". This is a very interesting detail and I can incorporate this into the logo design.
2. Come up with some ideas.
Once we have completed our research, mastered a great deal of information, and have a preliminary impression of what we are going to create, we can start brainstorming and creating ideas through a form called the morphological matrix. This is my secret weapon in logo design, a way to organize ideas effectively and combine them to produce clear ideas. Mind mapping is also a good way to help your inspiration flow like a torrent.
The method of morphological matrix is to take out a piece of white paper and then list some elements and components of logo design on the left side. Then, on the right, make your own ideas about each element. Conceptual, symbolic, practical, innovative, all put them on the right. Here is a picture of the morphological matrix. Since the customer is a stock brokerage company, concentrate on mining stocks. I decided to add a bit of line-painted peaks that represent both mining and stock movements. Remember that the most important thing in logo design is recognition, so we have to design unique logos so that people will remember.
3. Choose the type of logo
Now that the idea is there, we should decide what kind of logo to do. Here are the basic types of logos, >3, logos, and typography.
Explanatory logo
This type of logo is generally complex, graphical, and therefore not suitable for use as a company logo, because too complex images to take into account the scale of the display effect, this is the model of the logo.
Iconic logo
Iconic logos typically include symbolic icons and text. This logo is usually very powerful, it can help attract users to focus on the text, while the use of the icon presented a unique visual effect. And the use of such a wide range of logos, simply using the icon can also play a very good effect.
Text logo
Traditional, simple, but very dependent on the font design and style, is generally bold. Generally used in conservative industries, such as finance and law.
4. Start with black and white sketches first
Finally I chose the logo, because I have done a lot of creative, with this type of design can be perfect performance. Now we start sketching, in black and white. If a logo can be in the Black-and-white color can also be very beautiful, in a variety of proportions can also remain dry, but also applicable to postcards, stamps, networks, documents a variety of media. Then it's a success. Logo does not need special effects, light, gradient to create beauty, I usually avoid those special effects, just let my logo have simple beauty.
You can use a computer or paper to draw a sketch. Be sure not to be too complicated, and to be different from popular design trends so that your logo can shine for a long time. and pay attention to the proportion of each part of the logo, the following is my concept sketch, we do not care too much detail, details can be added later.
5. Font
Font selection is also one of the important points of logo design, the key to success or failure. Each font has its own unique, we want to ensure that the characteristics of the font and customer style, the concept of conformity. Do not use too many kinds of fonts in logo design, that creates very complex effects, and the perception is very uneven, one or two fonts is enough. If you want to make sure that your fonts are unique, you can design them yourself, or change them from existing fonts.
6. Determine the overall color
Color is also a very important element of the logo in the group, because the logo can be quickly converted to the viewer's feelings through color. Our thoughts are imaged by the subconscious of color, so we have to use color psychology to create the exact logo. When we choose a color, we should consider the meaning of different colors. There are a lot of color selection tools on the web, such as "Color Lovers" and "Adobe Kuler", which can help us choose the color system quickly and conveniently.
This is the color of my choice. Black (serious, strong, classic) blue (safe, powerful, successful) green (money, freshness, simplicity)
7. Organized together
All the elements are ready and now start relatively simple but complex parts of the organization. Make sure that you take vector graphics so that scaling does not lose quality. To ensure that the overall picture of the sense of balance, otherwise people feel that the font and image separation. Look at your logo to see if the effect will not be bad, will there be some other effect? Once you have repeatedly checked, this logo you feel can meet your aesthetic standards, then save, ready to show to the customer.
