Chang: Samsung and Intel like "Gorilla" Don't be afraid

TSMC Chairman Chang 18th to attend the Zhongtian Youth Forum, "dedicated to the Lost generation, and Chang dialogue" as the title, and host Chen Wenxi to talk about the semiconductor industry and life to share his views. He says TSMC has had three more contenders since he team the financial tsunami in 2009, with Samsung and Intel, the most "fearsome", like two "700-pound gorillas," but don't be afraid.

Chang points out that the company could say three more competitors, including GlobalFoundries, Samsung and Intel, since he took the helm of TSMC's CEO position. While Intel is the indirect competitor of TSMC, it is as important as the top two direct competitors: because Intel is fighting with TSMC's customers, but the customer is entirely dependent on TSMC's technology and production to survive, so helping customers defeat Intel must be TSMC's primary goal. Now, he says, TSMC is doing more than just "okay", but "very good".

Chang also vividly describes Samsung as very powerful as Intel, like "700-pound gorilla". In terms of research funding, TSMC is about $1.3 billion a year (quite 40 billion NT dollars), which is only comparable to the annual funding figures at MIT. Samsung, which spends about 3 billion dollars a year on research, has more intel.

But Chang commented that TSMC has a strong point, that is, customers and TSMC are partners, stand on the same side, so if the customer's research and development funding is included, the amount will be more than Intel and Samsung; So if TSMC adds to the cost of its customers ' research and development, two gorillas seem daunting, but less scary. And when the host Chen Wenxi joked that he was afraid of the two gorillas, he replied: "Not necessarily, if afraid also do not have to do."
