Cisco buys virtual network company Vcider to boost cloud computing competition

Vcider is a private enterprise, founded in 2010, specializes in providing institutions to create virtual private networks and connect to data center products.

For some time, Cisco has said it wants to make acquisitions in the virtualized web market. However, Cisco lost to the joint venture partner VMware in July this year. VMware bought a technology start-up company, Nicira, with 1.05 billion dollars.

Like Vcider, Nicira focuses on software-defined networks. Analysts say the technology is a threat to Cisco's core business.

' According to our view, the application of a software-defined network will pose the greatest risk to Cisco's dominant switch market share, ' said Brian Marshall, an analyst at Research institute ISI Group, in a research report Blaine Machel. This is an acquisition that will help Cisco increase software/virtualization expertise. We also believe that the acquisition is a response to VMware's takeover of Nicira.

EMC, the parent company of Cisco and VMware, established a joint venture in 2009 as a one-stop factory in the data center, tying Cisco's network devices and servers to EMC's storage devices and VMware's software.
