There is no such thing as a "cloud server", which can quickly form an industrial scale and be applied in practice. "Cloud server" sensitive to capture market demand, only in a short year, many server manufacturers at home and abroad have launched their own products. At present, although the "Cloud computing server" can not be given the exact definition, but compared with the existing general-purpose server, it has a unique feature, from a single faction.

Broadly speaking, cloud computing server is suitable for cloud computing applications, such as racks, blades and other servers, unlike general-purpose servers for a variety of applications, taking into account the versatility and scalability applications, the cloud server is focused on space-saving, reduce energy consumption and cost. So, born for the cloud, a new type of high-density deployment, energy-saving, easy to manage the characteristics, and the price per node relative to the rack server to be more inexpensive server applications.

First, the past life of cloud server

The traditional server is mainly oriented to the commercial operation of the enterprise, and improves the overall performance of the server by increasing the processor clock frequency, instruction set parallelism and kernel number. Companies represented by Intel and AMD tend to pursue processor performance excessively, ignoring energy efficiency factors such as power consumption, volume, and cost, resulting in lower server energy efficiency and high server size and power consumption.

This provides a condition for the early cloud server to be born. There is a huge market space in between, on the one hand, to balance between storage and calculation, but also low energy consumption, and cloud server products just fill this space. In 2010, as demand for cloud computing increased rapidly, some vendors saw business opportunities, especially for large cloud computing environments, and in the areas of dense and busy cloud computing ecosystems, such as Web services, social networking, and the use of HyperScale based design, The need for high-density computing performance and lower energy consumption and operating costs.

Second, the first cloud server was born

In fact, as early as March 2010, Dell launched the PowerEdge C-series server. Dell's C-series is the first server to be explicitly positioned in the cloud. Since then, HP's SL scalable servers, IBM's iDataPlex series servers, and the Supermicro SuperServer series are all servers for the new cloud computing domain, all of which can be said to be tailored for cloud computing.

The first vendor to introduce the concept of cloud computing server is not Dell. In the case of Poweredgetm C6100, there are four dual-socket server nodes in the 2U rack chassis, which take up less space, lower power and cooling consumption. C6100 is designed for hyper-scale, well-designed building blocks for high-performance cluster computing, WEB 2.0 environments, and cloud builders.

The Power Edge C6100 is designed with four dual server nodes in a 2U rack chassis, providing the highest density, ease of single node maintainability, and hot-swappable 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drives.

In addition, Dell also launched the power Edge of the C-series, including two rack servers and a PCIe expansion chassis. C1100 is a dual-slot 1U rack server that provides large-capacity memory and disk storage in 1U profile specifications; C2100 is a dual-socket six-core or quad-core 2U rack-type server; The PowerEdge c410x supports up to 16 PCIe devices for PCIe expansion chassis.
