While there are so many vendors trying to accelerate the adoption of corporate public clouds, Enterprise IT is always skeptical about refactoring the entire architecture to the cloud.
The new infrastructure-as-a-service platform and object storage services of Verizon Cloud are designed to give enterprises more flexibility and migration of legacy workloads into the public cloud. Citrix, meanwhile, recently released version 4.2 of its CloudPlatform to run legacy and "cloud-in-itself" applications on the same control panel at the same time.
However, Bryson Koehler, Verizon Cloud Test Version tester and CIO and executive vice president of The Weather Company, said he is interested in adopting the new Verizon cloud, but it is unclear how many other companies follow.
The Weather Company, which runs The Weather Channel cable network television and Weather.com, has transformed itself into a big data analytics company and has rewritten many of its applications in the hope of starting from scratch.
"Few companies rebuild and rebuild their entire organization on a massive scale at the same time," he said. "We happen to be in that position and we need to do that."
It is expected that the actual adoption rate of public cloud in the enterprise is still relatively wide. According to TechTarget's March 2013 Cloud Pulse survey, we found that 39% of 1297 respondents said they have started using public cloud, which has been the most widely adopted compared to private cloud (28%) and hybrid cloud (33%) .
But Verizon and AMD did not portray a very grand blueprint for corporate public clouds last week. A Forrester survey cites an executive at AMD that currently accounts for only 10% of corporate public cloud adoption.
Verizon cloud infrastructure details
Verizon's previous cloud offerings had scalability limitations, said Andrew Feldman, general manager of AMD's servers, and John Considine, CTO of Verizon Terremark, in a speech last week.
In addition, they also say that public cloud service providers make incorrect judgments about the market and think that enterprises will run their own application of the cloud properties of the script.
Verizon's data center securely partitions each virtual machine (VM), hypervisor, and client; security is enforced in hardware and AMD and Verizon work together on a per-VM basis based on layered data encryption, data inspection, and firewall capabilities flow. Users can extend private networks to the public cloud without changing any policies, addresses, and security configurations.
Citrix Public Cloud Partners Offer Improved CloudPlatform
"Our new cloud is a hybrid concept," which is also the model for most enterprise deployments, said Chandler Vaughn, vice president of advanced products at Codero, a cloud hosting provider that is using CloudPlatform 4.2 for delivery to customers service.
Vaughn said CloudPlatform 4.2's new network model provides support for every VM in private and public VLANs to help hybrid clouds
Vaughn said he observed that corporate public cloud adoption has grown a lot from 2009, and many businesses are no longer on the sidelines.
"Now we see the power of the cloud for everyone, but not everyone," he said. "It's a core strategy for the business, but they do not feel like losing exclusive control."
CloudPlatform 4.2 is also for the first time available in an area similar to Amazon Web Services (AWS). New compatibility with VMware allows ESXi VMs to be managed through vCenter.
For organizations deploying traditional workloads, CloudPlatform 4.2 provides virtual private cloud support, focusing on private cloud isolation and integration with Cisco's Unified Computing System, Object Storage and Network as a Service. Supports AWS APIs and new third-party plug-in frameworks that allow organizations to build custom CloudPlatform extensions.
Codeaugh's Vaughn said he also wanted to see how CloudStack was built in bare metal pre-allocation.
