Corporate acceptance of BYOD must revolve around cloud computing

BYOD (become Your Office Device) installs many company software on your own device so that you can use the company's resources. When an employee's device, such as an iphone, has such a management software installed, the employee's own mobile phone becomes the company's mobile phone, and the agent is constantly synchronized with the server (without knowing the details of the synchronized program and data). Although this is an employee's "Own Device", Byod from "Bring Your Own Device" to "become Your Office Device".

The BYOD model is a dramatic result of it consumerism. The motivation for this model comes from employees rather than companies, which in turn drives companies to change and adapt to new technology. However, these new technologies did not take into account the enterprise's application environment and requirements at the initial stage of design and development, so many IT support organizations are very concerned about the security and support risks that arise. "Consumerism is the most obvious sign of a change in the way companies look at technology," says Joel Osman, president of the Accenture Mobile company.

"I like to classify consumerism as cool changes," Osman says, "to be aware that, just a few years ago, ' I'm not very tech fan ' is almost the badge of honor in the business world, and corporate users are wary of the technology it imposes on them." ”

He said the IT department would mind, because it gave them more or less room to play, after all, the technology was not cool, so other people did not want to get involved.

"However, unlike now, technology has become a fashion in which business executives use their tablets and smartphones to do their jobs," says Osman. ”

What does this bring to it? Panic and collapse, it is quickly searching for a product to help solve the problem of rapid consumption.

Randy Roberts, vice president of Siemens Mobile Products, said: "It staff are panicked because they realize that BYOD is happening on their networks, that devices are pouring into the network, they don't know what the device is, they don't know who the user is, What applications they are using or what they are accessing. ”

The impact of cloud computing

Schadler, senior vice president and renowned analyst at Forrester Research, said that in 2013, the main way to tackle consumerism would revolve around cloud computing technology.

"We will really start to see a problem in 2013 that is related to the management and control of mobile devices and can be used," he says. When you deploy a mobile device management solution that forces your employees to use cumbersome, slow mailboxes, or have to log in every time, or have a bad user experience, they will not obey. ”

Moreover, the whole concept of MDM is essentially a temporary technique, as cloud computing gradually blurs the boundaries between mobile and schadler devices. "We will need to rethink the architecture, which is why MDM is a temporary technology, and no one is worried about Salesforce.com security, so if I rely on service providers to protect my data, I don't need such a temporary technology," he said. ”

Also, this service can be used on many platforms and can be accessed from any available hardware.

Another reason that might drive mobile services to cloud computing is the frustration of trying to provide mobile services in a traditional way.

Schadler said: "You will need to pass through the firewall, you will need to make a joint, you will need to give permission one after the other, this is terrible." ”

Roberts agreed: "If you move these to cloud services, all of these operations can be done in the cloud." ”

Make a plan

So, what are we going to do? First, companies need to make a clear plan before making decisions about the MDM system or the BYOD strategy, Roberts says. "You need to be sure what you're trying to accomplish," he says. ”

Red Hat's cloud-computing team also expressed the same meaning in its blog post, urging companies to accept the inevitability of BYOD. "In most cases, BYOD will need companies to do something, including introducing new products, educating users and adopting new processes," they wrote. At the very least, they need to understand the potential risks and develop plans to deal with the risks. Enterprises can not just say ' no ', accept BYOD is the only way forward. ”

More importantly, the development of these plans may involve the IT department working closely with other departments.

"This is not something that can be decided by the IT department alone," says Osman of Accenture. ”
