The benefits of green cloud computing are many: lower costs, faster upgrades, and simpler operational dimensions. In terms of social interests, it lowers the burden of the environment by reducing carbon emissions.

"The energy use of data centers is a relatively important consideration, and cloud solutions are more efficient than traditional systems." Eric Woods, of Pike, said.

Because the carbon footprint of it has increased recently. According to market research firm Verdantix, projections from 2011 to 2020 per 2% of total emissions from global information and communication technology (ICT)-related equipment and services are projected to increase in the proportion of carbon emissions to 4%.

What about now? Green Cloud?

There are three reasons why green Cloud solutions are more energy-efficient than traditional physical systems. The 1th is a more efficient way of delivering. Previously, IT departments had configured more servers, network devices, and storage architectures than needed. During the peak cycle, the business needs to avoid potential capacity issues. So they designed the system to reach the limit utilization cycle, but most of the time system is surplus.

Business dynamics also occupy a place. Companies sometimes have difficulty understanding and predicting the growth and peak load of demand, so they buy enough capacity, rather than excess, indispensable. And the company's budget policy encourages the Department to use all available funds for a certain period of time, otherwise there may be less distribution in the next year, and the fiscal mistakes will lead to excess.

Another benefit of green cloud computing is the multi-tenant. Shared data centers operate more efficiently. Similar to the way many tenants live in an apartment and use less energy than the tenants themselves buy, the cloud-computing architecture of many tenants reduces overall energy use and related carbon emissions. In fact, the different demand patterns of different companies flatten the aggregate demand peaks, making usage patterns predictable.

Using the cloud architecture can also save energy by increasing server utilization, which is the ratio of actual usage of server capacity. Large-scale cloud computing providers run their architectures at higher and more stable utilization levels, and are more capable of performing similar physical operations, so the same amount of processing can be done with fewer servers. Typical physical computer room applications may operate at 5% or 10% utilization, but the same applies to cloud computing that can reach 40% or 70%, with a sharp increase in the number of users per machine service.

In fact, servers running at higher utilization rates consume more energy, and the final boost is more likely to be compensated by a corresponding performance boost. Utilization increased from 5% to 20%, allowing the server to load 4 times times, while server energy consumption may have increased by only 10% to 20%.

Motive of the economic angle

So what are the potential cost savings? There are no precise calculations, but market analysts cite reductions in carbon emissions and the cost of energy.

By 2020, migrating to green cloud computing would reduce the company's carbon emissions by tens of 8.37 of millions of dollars a year, while reducing the cost of energy by $12.3 billion, according to the Verdantix survey.

Pike predicts that the cloud computing center will consume 139.8 terawatt per hour in 2020. If the company does not change the system, this number is 226.4 TWh. The reduction will drive the energy consumption of the entire data center from 2010 to 23.3 billion to 2020, and will lead to a 28% reduction in carbon emissions.

However, potential cost savings may occur with unstable conditions. Ironically, big companies tend to get the most out of it, as they may use advanced Data Center architecture design--boosting refrigeration and energy-line controls-that can reduce energy loss and consumption.

A survey by Accenture found that companies with more than 10,000 per cent of users reduced their energy and carbon emissions by 30% to 60% after converting to green cloud computing. Businesses with 1000 employees may be reduced by 60% to 90%, while small businesses of 100 users will be reduced by 90%.

Such a standard might lead to a server's assessment of cloud computing.

Woods said: "Now companies are starting to value environmental issues, they become the key to how to make data centers grow." ”
