Disney sees social gaming as a "high-growth business model", and CEO Bob Iger believes the move will benefit Disney's characters, stories and brands. Playdom is Facebook's fourth-largest competitor, with an estimated 42 million active players per month, and the company's best-known work is the Mafia theme game "mobsters". Analysts said it was Disney's response to EA's 400 million dollar takeover of Playfish last year. EA is already developing "FIFA superstar" for Facebook. Interestingly, EA's former chief executive, John Pleasants, is Playdom's current operator. John Pleasants joined Playdom after his departure from EA in 2009 and is now going to be the executive vice president of Disney. Disney's deal is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal year 2010. After entering the 2010, the wave of big issuers buying small social-game developers is growing.
