When Microsoft officially launched the SkyDrive client, cloud Storage's boss, Dropbox, also launched a new feature: Sharing files directly through links.
Dropbox will configure a separate link for all files in the shared folder. In both the Web page and the client, you can get the link directly from the file in the appropriate location. When you send a link to a friend, they can preview the file online, whether it's a photo, a chart, a slide, a document, or a video. At the same time, in the preview page, Dropbox also provides the download function.
Dropbox's link-sharing feature breaks the Dropbox's dependence on both sides, even if the other person has no Dropbox account, the user can send a link to share the file to each other. At the same time, the sharing of links more wide, faster transmission. Only need a link, the supervisor can send the explanation document to all employees, the teacher may also send the examination request to all students, the mail attachment function may die.
The Dropbox link feature also freed from the Dropbox client limit. With the preview link, any content can be instantly shared online. So Dropbox may evolve from a cloud storage service to a cloud-sharing platform with this feature.
Of course, there are some restrictions on link sharing, when the document requires more than one person to edit, the way to share the client is obviously better. Link sharing can also be affected by bandwidth, if large video files need to load for a long time, this will affect the user's use. In addition, in the form of public links to share audio and video books and other documents will also have copyright problems, which is also Dropbox need to consider.
The cloud-storage war has intensified, and Google Drive will offer 100GB of paid space at the same time as SkyDrive launched 25GB of free storage space. However, Microsoft and Google may have chosen the wrong direction, the size of the space is not the decision of cloud storage, the convenience of sharing, rapid and easy to use is the core competitiveness of cloud storage. By introducing the link-sharing feature, Dropbox is once again in the cloud-storage battlefield.
