EBay CEO: Europe's electricity market will continue to show a slump

Earnings showed that the company achieved revenue in the current quarter of 3.748 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 14% per cent, net profit of 677 million U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 19%. John Donahoe, CEO and chief executive of ebay, and CFO Bob Swang (Bob Swan) Donahoe the company's first-quarter results and responded to questions from analysts:

Analyst: PayPal and ebay users faster growth, the value of new users? Where are the main sources?

Bob Swang: Generally speaking, when users grow faster on all our platforms, new users are less active in the early stages. The challenge for the company is to keep these new users on our platform, but it will take time. These new users come mainly from the mobile end and emerging markets.

Analyst: You just mentioned that the European market is not very good, what is the reason?

Donahoe: In January 2013, we expected the macroeconomic environment of the US market to gradually turn better this year. As Europe has gone through a bad 2012, we expect the overall macroeconomic situation in Europe to be a little less likely this year. It's been 3 months now and our expectations for the US economy have not changed, even better, and Europe is expected to be worse than last year. Specifically, ebay's UK market has grown more slowly than we expected, for two reasons: poor traffic and a weak sterling performance. In general, we expect the European market to be stable for the remainder of the year, perhaps slightly worse than in the first quarter.

Analyst: How does ebay perform in the BRICS countries, especially Russia? What is the development plan for ebay in Russia over the next 3-5 years?

Donahoe: We are currently the largest company in Russia, but we still do not have a dedicated Russian website, ebay Russian users are mainly through our website for overseas online shopping crowd, while the Russian PayPal users mainly through PayPal to engage in export business.

Russian electric business development has two characteristics: first, they like to use to make payment, the other is logistics problems. But for us, this situation encompasses challenges and opportunities. For example, ebay has obtained a local payment license from Russia. We discuss with Russian investors, banks and suppliers that PayPal is now the best payment tool to streamline the payment process, and we hope that the future together will lead to a shift from cash payments to electronic payments.
