Arizona, State Phoenix is one of the driest places in the United States, with temperatures often exceeding 38 degrees Celsius. However, ebay recently announced that the company has built a 20-year data center in Phoenix and is about to open.
The data center was originally a two-storey warehouse designed to store and test equipment for a nearby tier level 4 data center, according to Mike Lewis, key mission engineering director of ebay. "Later, there was less space available for the warehouse, so we decided to upgrade the warehouse to a tier level 2 data center." Lewis said.
At the beginning of its construction, ebay wanted it to be a data center that could rapidly expand, with minimal impact on business operations, and wanted different parts of the data center to have different levels of tier, with as much density as possible. In addition, ebay also requested that the data center of the roof also used to store a server rack with the "box."
In short, ebay has a demand book containing 50 requirements, of which only 17 can be solved. "To be honest, there's a problem that we really don't know how to solve," Lewis said. ”
The company's contractors eventually designed a 6-megawatt data center (which could be upgraded to 12 MW in the future) with a 7000 sq. ft. of primary server space and a 7000-square-foot area on the roof for the "box" on ebay.
The entire data center is actually a modular design. Lewis said: "They sent the rack to assemble the server, we directly on top of the operation of our application on the line, four hours to solve." ”
Of course, in this sweltering place, the data center is cooled all year round. Lewis says they have an oversized cooling tower that runs the condensate circulation system underground.
"We get 29 degrees Celsius of condensed water all year round," he said. Lewis said. However, Lewis said condensate water was not used directly, but was reduced by one or two degrees by a heat exchanger.
Other energy-saving measures include the use of http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/38009.html ">led lights." Lewis said ebay wanted the data center's PUE value to be up to 1.1, but the actual value of his boss did not let him disclose.
