To provide guidance to the Enterprise in the process of selecting a provider, and then to maximize performance efficiencies and reduce costs, American professional IaaS Research Institute Cloud Spector has conducted a test of the largest 5 IaaS cloud service performance in the global marketplace, evaluating their performance . The test results show that Microsoft Windows Azure's IaaS service performs relatively better in performance than the industry-renowned cloud computing service providers such as Amazon EC2 and HP Cloud. Price ratio is also higher than similar cloud service providers.
During the 5-day Test evaluation, Cloud Spector selected Amazon EC2, Rackspace OpenStack Cloud, HP Cloud, SoftLayer cloudlayer Compute, and Windows Azure and other 5 mainstream cloud service providers, and as far as possible the use of each provider's 4GB configuration. Cloud Spector runs Unixbench performance tests 3 times a day in 5 days and records the highest and lowest scores per day in chronological order to collect performance changes data for IaaS services. Unixbench testing is a widely used open source benchmarking application in the IT industry to calculate system scores by running a series of individual tests designed to pressurize the server to test the load size and processing efficiency that it can handle.
Cloud Spector's test results show that while IaaS providers in the market are growing rapidly, there is a significant difference in service between them. On average, the highest-performing provider during the test was Windows Azure, whose test scores were 3 times times higher than the Amazon EC2, while HP Cloud, SoftLayer and Rackspace ranked second and three in the test. The test results also show that SoftLayer and Windows Azure still exhibit good stability after a period of continuous running tests, with a variation of nearly 0%.

In addition to performance, Cloud Spector's report points out that while the IaaS industry has experienced intense price competition since 2011, cloud providers, including Amazon EC2, HP Cloud and Windows Azure, have attracted customers with lower quotations. But the lowest cost cannot be equated with bringing the best value to the customer. While Amazon EC2 has the lowest price advantage (tied to Windows Azure) for more than four other providers, it still lags behind Windows Azure, HP Cloud and SoftLayer Cloud services, considering its performance.
The analysis also cloudspecs scores to further standardize the cost/performance values of each cloud server test, with Windows Azure scoring the highest performance and cost-price points during the 5-day test period. For price/performance, Windows Azure averages 12,023 dots. After the highest score specification is 100, the cloudspecs of the other providers are as follows:
Cloud Spector says the Unixbench test provides a general overview of the user to compare performance differences between different IaaS providers. But it is only a test, in order to more fully collect the Enterprise Cloud application and IT strategy-related performance metrics, users also need to refer to broader tests and metrics (such as measuring CPU, disk, RAM, internal network, external network, and application performance) to make smarter, more rational public cloud and private cloud purchasing decisions.
