Some of Facebook's most recent major product updates have been achieved by acquiring other companies, and several companies have been shut down. In April this year, Facebook acquired the Divvyshot, a start-up company offering photo-sharing services, and hired its start-up team to photos the Facebook release; this summer, Facebook acquired the Hot Potato, a start-up that provided "check-in" services,  Justin Shaffer, its founder, is responsible for the revision of Facebook Groups, followed by the location of Facebook's Schaffer service places. In addition, Facebook has also acquired start-up companies Nextstop, Drop.io and FriendFeed.  Blette Thelles (Bret Taylor), one of Frindfeed's founders, is now Facebook's chief technology officer.
