The news that suddenly exploded today was a bit confusing: "Prepare for the next generation of social networks", with Facebook buying virtual reality company Oculus VR for about 2 billion dollars. Even more surprising, according to The Verge, it took only 5 days to hammer out the $2 billion trillion-dollar purchase – Game Developer conference, the last five days of the Game Developers ' conference, to complete all the negotiations on the acquisition of Oculus.
Mazar said on today's investor conference call that Oculus would remain independent after Facebook acquired Oculus, and cited Instagram as an example: Instagram remained independent after being acquired last April and currently has 200 million active users every month. Mazar says this fully demonstrates Faceook's ability to handle 1 billion-level acquisitions.
Mazar also said that he believes that virtual reality will become a new darling after the PC age and mobile era, will bring a new interactive experience, change all aspects of life. So he decided to pre-empt the takeover of Oculus.
Mazar fully believes in Oculus's team, saying that they are very clear about their prospects and what they should do, and that Facebook needs to help them get into the market faster. This is reminiscent of Oculus's biggest competitor: Sony's Project Morpheus. The latter's developer suite is expected to ship in June, one months earlier than Oculus's DK2.
In the recent GDC, Sony's Project Morpheus eye-catching, with its strong development strength and market experience to become Oculus's arch-rival, and today in Oculus alongside Facebook, at least in the marketing, Oculus has not been so big disadvantage.
