Facebook uses ROCKSDB to drive a number of user-oriented applications that are poorly performing because of the need to access external storage over the network, and Facebook also uses ROCKSDB to address some of the problems associated with low utilization of solid-state HDD IO. Facebook's database engineer, Dhruba Borthakur, introduced Rocksdb's design rationale and principles in its personal blog, but the fact that the biggest driver of the ROCKSDB was the sharp drop in the price of the server Flash memory card, Facebook's custom server has started to take full use of flash memory.
With the advent of the Flash storage era, some new applications can be managed in flash memory and quickly access their data sets without accessing external data over the network. These new applications use what we call embedded databases.
If a database query is made in a local flash, the speed is theoretically one-fold faster than the internal network query through the datacenter, because there are 50 subtle delays in the internal network of the database Center.
Rocksdb's ability to take advantage of the high IOPS performance of flash memory while also leveraging the computing performance of multi-core servers, Facebook has now released Rocksdb run-benchmark test results on Fusion-io servers on the GitHub page of Rocksdb.
