We now know http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/1560.html "> Facebook's mini data center on the edge of the 330,000-square-foot data center in Oregon State Prineville: Sub-Zero is its emergency standby facility.
The plan is to build a new, low-power, deep storage device that will be completed by Facebook's engineers in the next three to 6-9 months. "When the device is not in use, it will not consume energy," said Tom Furlong, vice president of Facebook's website. "We build a special building to deploy the equipment and optimize the building to support the device, and we don't need to visit the device regularly." ”
Furlong says the building is boxy, with rows of quiet and low-power machines.
The company disclosed the existence of the new building in its latest planning permit. Facebook called the building a sub-zero, although Furlong said he did not use the name in public (Sub-Zero's trademark has been registered with a high-end refrigerator).
In addition to the 62,000 sq ft sub-zero,facebook is building a second 330,000-square-foot data center. Meanwhile, Apple is transferring its data to 500,000 square feet of server rack space.
Sub-Zero will implement large-scale deep archive, while some enterprises still use tape backup.
Facebook does not use tape backup, but all its data holds two copies of backup: one in the case of a real-time server and the other for emergency use only.
Facebook wants to turn off the power of these secondary backup storage drives when it's not needed.
The program is at an early stage and the design team has 6-9 months to build Sub-Zero storage servers and adjust the software on their networks to work with them.
They want to slash sub-zero power consumption. Now Facebook has a server rack that consumes about 4.5 kilowatts. In the Sub-Zero data center, its goal is to descend to about 1.5 kilowatts.
Furlong says Facebook wants to add another sub-zero-type storage facility next to its North Carolina State Cleveland data Center.
Facebook is not the only company to add smaller attachments to its vast data center. Apple recently built a 23000-square-foot building next to the data center of North Carolina State's maiden town. Nobody except Apple knows what this building is called "Tactical data Center" for.
Perhaps the "Tactical Data Center" is an Apple's own refrigeration facility? Maybe. Facebook has opened up its data center and server design, but Apple is famous for keeping its business secret.
No one has heard of other companies setting up a refrigeration facility like Facebook, but it doesn't mean it won't happen.
