Crowdstar is a developer of many Facebook games, and Microsoft offers more than $200 million. Sales of the US Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were down 9.8% last year, a stark contrast to the growth of social-networking games, according to NPD, the North American market research firm. Games on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are free, and game developers profit by selling virtual items in the game. MSN Games is a Microsoft department that offers more than 1000 online games, including Gems Bejeweled, mahjong tiles and spades card games.  The MSN site's rivals are Yahoo and AOL. Microsoft offers Xbox Live online gaming service with a whopping 23 million users, who can also log in to Facebook accounts through the service. Phil Spencer, vice president of Microsoft's gaming department, said last July that the company intends to develop more online games and community games Fille Spencer. (Chin Liang)
