Clearly, Blu-ray discs can be used not only as a carrier of movies and games, but also as a tool for large data storage. Facebook has announced that it is developing a prototype of a new data storage system that can use 10000 Blu-ray discs to store petabytes of data-even up to 5PB. Facebook announced the announcement at the "Open Computing Project Summit" held this week.
According to PC, Facebook uses a "cold storage" system that is rarely used in the data backup industry. Facebook says such a system could be used to store a user's photo and video backup, just in case.
By using Blu-ray discs instead of traditional hard drives, Facebook says it can reduce overall 50% of hard drives and 80% of cold storage energy. In addition, since Blu-ray Disc manufacturers can squeeze more storage space, the system can easily accommodate more data storage.
Although the system is still at an early stage of development, Facebook says it is likely to carry out full load testing later this year.
