The server is basically a lite and exposed motherboard that is placed on a rack of refrigerator size. The engineer explained that the purpose of the design was to make the ventilation more effective. Systems based on this server architecture require less cooling. As redundant components are removed, servers can work in environments up to 85 degrees Fahrenheit (most servers hang up at 75 degrees Fahrenheit). As Facebook begins to outline its ideas, traditional data experts are skeptical. Frank Frankowski (Frank Frankovsky) is the vice-president of Facebook's hardware design and supply chain operations and the lead person for the Open computing project. "The temperature at the General data Center is 60 or 65 degrees Fahrenheit, and there is a gust of 35 miles per hour," he says. "A more efficient design allows Facebook to generously place its data center near the North Pole," he said. Facebook will build a similar data center in Iowa, the U.S., which has cheap wind power.
