In the 3 months since Google Reader was shut down, the "Chief alternative", Feedly, has grown to today--breaking 12 million users--from the 4 million subscribers before Google Reader's announcement of the retirement message. Not only that, now feedly is not only a mobile phone reading application. Feedly has grown into a platform as it announces its commitment to cloud devices, API services, and the introduction of an independent web portal based on feedly Cloud.
Feedly has already had an extended application on Chrome and Safari, with a single version of the Web page supported by the cloud, users will no longer be restricted to browser versions and can access feedly on any device or platform. Previously, demand for this feature ranked first in the feedly user voice (UserVoice) vote, with 24,536 people supporting the development of this feature. It is now moved to the completed list.
The use of cloud devices not only allows feedly content to be pushed and refreshed faster, but also, prior to feedly on June 4, promised to provide APIs for other services. The first batch of cooperation products are: IFTTT (users by issuing "if so," the instructions to link including feedly, including 64 kinds of Internet products or services), Sprout Social (for enterprises to provide content and participation in the analysis of media management platform), Nextgen Reader (reading software on Windows 8 and Windows Phones), Gnewsreader (support for Symbian Systems and BlackBerry 10 systems), reading software on Android Press, greader, Newsify, Pure News Widget and Meneré under Windows desktop. After the "plan of Normandy" was announced, the Feedly team said that more than 200 developers had contacted them in the hope of getting the support of the API, and that the list would continue to grow longer in the years to come.
Interestingly enough, the top-ranked requirement now on Feedly's user voice page becomes "Development applications for Windows Phone and Windows 8". Feedly is considering the matter, but before the official application, they have to meet the needs of users by first providing APIs for the main reading software available under Windows System. Whether it's providing an independent web portal via cloud services, choosing the first API service for the BlackBerry/windows/Android mainstream reading software, or collaborating with IFTTT to connect itself to 63 other hot service--feedly are eliminating the differences between platforms as much as possible, in Google Reader to gain more users in the last 10 days before closing.
Now, Feedly's focus is still on the transfer of Google Reader users, so the home page offers two registration options-log in to Google Account and import subscriptions to Google Reader, or register new users. However, on the June 17 blog, they also announced that it would soon add to the login of Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and LinkedIn accounts.
At the same time, Feedly also said that the number of content they crawl daily as high as 25 million, in fact, feedly server capacity is much higher than this number, but there are still users reflected in the update of the partial feed lag or jam phenomenon. As feedly is growing rapidly and expanding to various languages and content around the world, some sites may not yet recognize feedly. They want more sites to add them (Feedly fetcher) to the white list.
Pingwest contacted Feedly co-founder Cyril Moutran for an interview and we will update the latest news immediately.
Finally, Feedly said: "I wish Google reader a happy retirement!"
