First cloud storage Open Interface Specification CDMI approved by ISO

The International Standards Organization (ISO) recently approved the Cloud Data management Interface (CDMI) specification, which contains a set of protocols that define how the enterprise securely migrates data between private and public clouds.

The CDMI specification is a way to create interfaces for enterprise access to data stored in the cloud, which is achieved by preserving metadata for the information that the enterprise stores in the cloud. With metadata related to cloud data, companies can extract cloud data at any time without having to control where the data is actually stored.

"This metadata can also complement existing interfaces," said SNIa, President Wayne Adams. This standard is available for Amazon file or block data and can also be used for many storage protocols, such as NFS, CIFS, or iSCSI. ”

CDMI, based on the RESTful HTTP protocol, provides both data paths and control paths for cloud storage, providing a standardized common interoperable format for data security migration between cloud and cloud and related data requirements. This standard can be applied to storage cloud deployment patterns such as public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud.

CDMI also defines service levels for cloud data, such as how long data should be kept, how many backups to keep, and whether these backups need to be stored offsite, and so on.

"It's the only open interface to the cloud," Adams said.

CDMI norms have been adopted by some manufacturers and government departments. At present, there are five vendors--mezeo software, scality, NETAPP, Data Direct network and Compuverde are selling CDMI certified products.

In the United States, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a staunch supporter of CDMI. In Japan, the nonprofit Global Cloud Technology Forum is also pushing the CDMI standard as a government agency to use its APIs to migrate data in catastrophic events such as the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster.

In Italy, according to Oracle System Management product standards director Anthony Di Cenzo, the government has asked the government's public Management digitization project to use this standard in its public service proposals.

Oracle is one of 21 members of the SNIa Cloud Storage Initiative Group. Other members include CAs, Cisco, Cleversafe, EMC, HP, HDS, IBM, and LSI.
