Sina Science and technology news Beijing time of November 13, the market research company IDC reported that Google's Android platform to achieve a new milestone in the third quarter, Android phones in the global smartphone shipments in the first breakthrough 80%. In addition, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform performed well in the third quarter, with handset shipments growing 156% per cent year-on-year. Remont Lamasse Ramon Llamas, IDC research manager, said: "The third quarter of Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant progress." Although market share is different, there is an important factor behind the success of both: price. Both platforms offer a range of products that are low enough to be accepted by the mass market, and the mass market is an important driving force for the development of the market as a whole. IDC said Android's third-quarter share of shipments reached 81% per cent due to "extensive and in-depth vendor support". Samsung accounted for 39.9% of Android phone shipments, ranking first, while other Android companies are still vying for "meaningful market share". In the third quarter, Apple's iOS platform shipped a market share of 12.9%, down from 14.4% in the same period last year. IDC believes this is due to "weak market demand before iOS 7 smartphone sales". "If 9 million shipments in the last week of September reflect future acceptance, then iOS will have another record quarter in terms of shipments, market share and year-on-year growth rates." "Windows phone's shipping market share is 3.6%, up from 2% in the same period last year." In the third quarter, Windows phone phones shipped 9.5 million units, while Nokia was in the lead. "In the third quarter, Nokia accounted for 93.2% of Windows Phone handset shipments, marking a new milestone in the company's brief history of moving to Microsoft," said IDC. At the same time, the participation of other manufacturers is still inconsistent. Although some vendors have entered the Windows Phone platform from a year ago, shipments still lag far behind Nokia. "BlackBerry's market share is still slipping, with a 1.7% per cent share of shipments in the third quarter, down from 4.5% in the same period last year." (Zhang Fan)
