This page describes how to use a copy of the CD-ROM related files to a USB drive, such as a U disk (or flash memory card), and make it the boot disk method to install Ubuntu. This approach is handy for laptops that are ultra lightweight and have no optical drives but can be started from USB. The main steps include:

* Prepare USB Memory Stick
* Start computer from USB memory stick
* Install Ubuntu from bootable CD

Note: It is highly recommended to use the latest version of Ubuntu to prepare USB memory sticks.

Check your USB memory stick

Booting from a USB memory stick can be very handy, but there is no guarantee that the combination of the particular computer and USB memory stick you use will be successful. Even if you can successfully start a computer with your USB memory stick, it will work on another computer. If this happens, you will need to experiment with the various BIOS settings on your computer. Verify that the selected memory stick has enough capacity to store content from the installation CD (approximately 700 megabytes) and recommends 1G memory stick. The previous version of Syslinux 3.00 requires the use of the FAT16 file system, and most USB memory sticks are automatically formatted for this file system. FAT16 is the most compatible file system and most recommended. In version 3.00, Syslinux also supports FAT32 file systems. Plug the USB memory stick you want to use as a boot into the computer, run the command "DMESG" in a few seconds, or command "sudo fdisk-l" to find the disk letter that the system assigns to the USB memory stick. The following instructions will use "/dev/sdx1" to remember to replace X with the disk you just found.

Automatic installation

UNetbootin (graphical interface that can be run from Windows or Linux)

UNetbootin can automatically create a bootable Ubuntu UBS drive from the ISO file by providing a graphical interface, which can be performed from Windows, Linux, or from the Ubuntu Live CD.

(optional) If you want to activate the initial boot menu for the Ubuntu Live CD, such as if you want to disable framebuffer or want to read the Help screen and cheatcodes for the Ubuntu Live CD, Please modify your USB memory stick as follows in the UNetbootin installation: 1 Delete syslinux.cfg or rename it to Syslinux.old 2 Enter the Isolinux folder isolinux.cfg renamed to Syslinux.cfg 3) to return to the previous folder, the Isolinux folder renamed to Syslinux
