Tens of thousands of websites have recently been hacked by hackers, including the United Nations and British government websites. The hacked sites were embedded in an attack code that attempted to use security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows to install malicious software into the visitor's computer.
Attackers seem to have breached these sites with security vulnerabilities in Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Services) Web servers. In a warning released last week, Microsoft said it was investigating reports that there were no fixed security vulnerabilities in the IIS server. However, Microsoft said at the time that he did not know anyone trying to exploit the security breach.
A security breach in the IIS server was the main reason for these sites being breached, panda security, a Spanish anti-virus software manufacturer, said in Thursday. Microsoft spokeswoman did not provide more information when asked if Microsoft had heard panda or if thousands of websites had been compromised by a security breach on an IIS server.
According to Finnish antivirus manufacturer F, the number of Web pages breached in this attack is close to 500,000. These hacked web pages provide malware.
