VMware announces integrated Nicira SDN technology and Hybrid cloud plan

VMware announced today March 14 that it will consolidate its software definition network (SDN) technology from Nicira to the Vcloud suite, and it has unveiled a new hybrid cloud services program that will provide customers with a VMware public cloud.

Both of these messages are significant, but not entirely unexpected. After VMware spent 1.2 billion dollars last year to buy Nicira, industry watchers expect the company to integrate the start-up technology into its platform. The public cloud plan has been rumored for weeks, and VMware has even confirmed the media's coverage of its public cloud plans via Twitter, but then deleted the confirmation.

VMware did not disclose much information about the hybrid cloud products that will be launched later this year, but Forrester analyst James Staten wrote in his blog post, "VMware unveils its public cloud," that the company launched its infrastructure, a service product, But it is not called the product. The service will compete with the giant of the IaaS industry, including Amazon Cloud computing services, IBM Enterprise SmartCloud, HP Cloud computing and Rackspace.

VMware uses the term "mixed cloud" rather than "public cloud", and wants customers to look forward to the solution, and VMware wants customers to extend the public cloud as an extension of their existing VMware operations. The company has in the past provided public cloud products to clients through its Vcloud director supplier partners, but this time the company announced it would provide a public cloud for VMware operations.

VMware has also dug up an external public cloud manager to oversee its new hybrid cloud division, and former IaaS supplier Savvis chief executive Bill Fathers will lead VMware's latest hybrid and public cloud sector.

Nicira technology integration is expected to be launched in the second half of this year, the new name will be VMware NSX. This integrates the Nicira network virtualization platform with the VMware Vcloud Network and security product family. "VMware NSX will fully exploit the potential of network virtualization across VMware and non-VMware hypervisor and Cloud management systems, as well as the underlying network hardware," the company wrote in a press release. ”
