Male players choose female characters to play online games (such players are often relegated to the "Simon"), they will change the way they speak to match the female image-but their actions have exposed the true face ...

Information, communication and powering, a new study published in the Chinese translation of information, communication and society, found that researchers created a custom task in the famous online World of Warcraft and then called 375 World of Warcraft players, Let them split into groups to play these tasks. These tasks take an average of 1.5 hours to complete, and each player's actions and conversations are recorded and methodically encoded.

The researchers found that men were 3 times times more likely to choose a heterosexual role than women (23% vs 7%). When elected to the female role, these male players are strongly inclined to choose the good-looking, traditional hairstyle characters-long hair fluttering rather than pink Moses dry head. And their way of chatting is also moving closer to the way women speak in real life. They use more emotional expressions and more exclamation points than men who do not choose the opposite sex. In other words, the female characters created by these men are extremely stereotyped "sensual beauties".

Although sex-changing male players can "speak women" in part, none of them can "walk a woman's path". The researchers found that in the study all men moved in a different way than women. Male players are more likely to move backwards, prefer to stay away from the team, and jump more than twice times the number of women. On the way to move around, regardless of gender conversion, male players are similar. So if you want to know if the female night elf is a fake sister, watch how she walks. As the author of the article, Professor Mia Cansalvo, said, "The movement is not as conscious as the conversation, so it is a touchstone for gender identification." ”

It's even weirder. Rossa Marti, the first author of the article, said, "Male players do not choose female roles to act like women." The results of our interviews do not suggest that they are sexually turned into "pretending" to be female players. ”

In fact, it's all about the butt. Because players see their chosen roles in the third-person perspective, men are faced with the choice of staring at a sister's butt for 20 hours a week or 20 hours a week on a man's butt. Or, to be more serious, men who are gender-converted "tend to appreciate the beauty of female role form". This means that, although men who take gender change do not deliberately pretend to be women, they unconsciously adopt a more feminine way of speaking.

Rossa Marti and colleagues ' studies of virtual worlds and roles have found that people unconsciously adapt to their role expectations. For example, we found that college students with a slightly higher role would be more aggressive in negotiating tasks than those who use shorter characters. Of course, people can only follow the stereotype they know. Maybe that's why sex-changing men speak the way women speak, but they can't grasp the subtle differences in how they move.

The hip theory also explains another puzzling statistic: Why do you choose to convert more men than women? Given that most of the mainstream video games--and the female characters in these games--are designed by men, the gamers are predominantly male-oriented, and the aesthetic-based gender shift is made sense. But in turn, male roles are not designed for female designers, so female players may lack the motivation to sexually turn. (also, the corresponding version of the female player is not a muscle-bursting vest-gun man.) )

People often think that the virtual world is a place where you can play freely and create a new self. But game design and psychology are often complicit, encouraging us to perpetuate the stereotype and the state of being in the offline world. Perhaps the most fascinating irony of our contemporary virtual world is that it gives us less freedom of play.
