Gartner: Five major concerns about private cloud

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) definition of cloud computing has been recognized in the industry, but research firm Gartner says there are still a lot of misunderstandings and confusion about cloud computing, and the company has cited five misconceptions.

First, let's look at what cloud computing is, and the NIST definition of cloud computing must have five features: on-demand self-service, extensive network connectivity, resource sharing, rapid scalability or scalability, and measurable services.

Gartner analyst Tom Bittman says the deployment of cloud services is driven primarily by "Virtualization in Enterprise rapid penetration" as a way for companies to deliver IT services more efficiently. But the hype about cloud computing is confusing, and for potential it buyers, Bittman's advice is: "It companies must steer clear of hype and focus on the private cloud computing sector, which has the most business value." "Here are some of the most common misconceptions about cloud computing:

Cloud computing is not just virtualization

Just throwing the Admin program onto the server is not private cloud computing. While virtualization is a key component of cloud computing, virtualization itself is not a cloud. Virtualization technology allows enterprises to share and allocate resources, which is part of the NIST definition of cloud computing. But it is technically considered a cloud environment and requires the ability to self-service and extend resources. A private cloud is a resource that is used exclusively by a single enterprise, or a cloud-based resource is completely isolated, compared to a public cloud or a mixed cloud.

Cloud computing is not just about saving money

One of the biggest misconceptions about cloud computing in IT companies is that cloud computing can save money. Cloud computing can save money, but it does not save itself. Automation technology is an important part of the private cloud network, which is an important investment for many IT companies. Automation technology can help to reallocate resources more efficiently, and it can also help organizations reduce overall costs, such as reducing the purchase requirements of new hardware, which can save money. But Gartner says the main advantage of deploying cloud computing models should not be to save money, but to increase agility and dynamic scalability, which can increase the speed of market access.

Private cloud is not always within the enterprise

Many people think that the private cloud is in the enterprise's data center, while the public cloud is from a Third-party service provider. Many vendors sell private cloud deployments outside the enterprise, which means that resources are allocated to individual customers without the presence of multiple tenants, sharing resource pools among different customers. "Private cloud computing is defined by privacy, not by location, ownership or management responsibility," says Bittman. "Enterprises should pay attention to the various security definitions of suppliers. For example, some vendors may outsource their data center business to managed facilities, or share resources among customers and use VPNs to separate customers. Bittman recommends that companies learn more about externally deployed cloud products.

Private clouds are not just in the infrastructure layer

Private cloud computing is often considered a virtual infrastructure service, but in fact there are other private cloud deployments, especially at the software and platform level, and are increasingly appearing in other forms. Bittman says the IaaS layer is the fastest growing cloud computing, but that doesn't mean it's the most important.

"IaaS simply provides the lowest level of data center resources in a simple way of consumption and does not fundamentally change IT operations," he says. "At the platform as a service (PaaS) layer, organizations can create custom applications to run on the cloud infrastructure." PAAs is both public and private, and you can host application development services in your own data center or hosted in a vendor-specific environment.

It's not always private.

For many companies, the private cloud is the first step into the cloud computing network, providing the various advantages of cloud computing (agility, scalability, and efficiency) without the security problems of using a public cloud, but Bittman predicts that as the cloud market continues to evolve, companies will gradually start using public cloud resources. Service level agreements and security precautions will evolve to maturity, and the impact of interruptions and downtime will be minimized. Gartner predicts that, in the end, most private cloud deployments will become hybrid clouds, meaning they will start leveraging public cloud resources. This also means that you now use a private cloud that might use a hybrid cloud in the future. "Starting with the private cloud, it positioned itself as a ' broker ' for all enterprise services, whether private cloud, public cloud, mixed cloud or traditional environment service," Bittman said, "The private cloud that develops into a mixed cloud or public cloud can retain ownership of self-service, which we call ' The IT future vision of hybrid it. ”
