Gates Foundation to "Explore the big challenge" fifth application launch

Washington (reporter Zhao Fenghua) The Gates Foundation began to accept the fifth round of the "Explore Big challenge" project (Grand Challenge Explorations) since March 25, 2010. The project is geared toward global funding for bold rather than traditional research projects aimed at exploring and discovering new ways to address global health problems.  The deadline for this round of applications is 12 o'clock noon May 19. The total amount of 100 million dollars in the "Explore the big challenge" started in 2008, for 5 years, two rounds a year. Each round will solicit innovative solutions for specific topics in a number of global health areas.  Once the program is selected, the Gates Foundation will receive 100,000 dollars in financial support. So far, innovations funded by the project include a special small microscope with a mobile camera to capture photos of malaria parasite samples, which will be used to further compute the viral load and eventually transmit the test results wirelessly to the medical facility for tracking management.  It also includes the use of anaerobic gases to kill the TB virus without harming the surrounding tissue and the development of new spectral antimicrobial agents, using the natural defense function of the human eye. According to the introduction, this round of applications will be for the four major themes to solicit innovative applications: first, Low-cost mobile phone applications focused on global health issues. Ii. new technologies to improve the health of mothers and babies. Iii. innovative approaches to the prevention and control of communicable diseases.  Iv. innovative contraceptive technology. "Exploring the big challenge" encourages individuals or organizations from any subject to submit their own innovative ideas. "China has a lot of creative minds and we are eager to see more applications from China," he said.  The head of the Gates Foundation's global Health program said. It is reported that the "explore the big challenge" results will be applied to the date of May 19, about 4 months after the announcement and release of funds.
