GM to step up imports of cars from China and Mexico

According to foreign media reports, GM is cutting U.S. staff at the same time trying to increase the number of vehicles imported from overseas factories, imports will mainly from the establishment in Mexico and China's subordinate factories. The media commented that GM's Friday move amounted to a mockery of the United Auto Workers Union (UAW). In a letter to members of Congress, the United Auto Workers Union (UAW), on behalf of GM's workers, expressed the hope that the government would give it more aid, and GM's car giants "should be able to retain as many jobs as possible in the United States". However, managers have long accepted the suggestion that in order to return to profitability as soon as possible, GM must import a significant portion of its cars from its foreign factories, either in low-wage countries such as Mexico and China, or in lower-cost countries such as Japan. In fact, One-third of GM's cars in the United States are imported. That proportion has not changed in the plans that GM is prepared to submit to the Government. The plan is mainly for GM to avoid a meltdown, hoping to get more new government loans. Future GM could become a smaller company with fewer employees and lower domestic and foreign production. GM's import adjustment will be to increase imports from low-cost countries, notably Mexico and China, but reduce imports from Europe and Canada. Some economists, such as David Autor of MIT, say that Chinese-made cars are "competitive in the US" compared to other countries. Sanshan)
