People familiar with the matter said the deal was priced at $ tens of millions of trillion, essentially to buy uptake's 20 team members in Palo Alto, Calif. Groupon said it had no plans to close the uptake.com site immediately, but would close uptake's realtravel site around March 12. Uptake CEO Li (Yen Lee) will become a Groupon consultant, co-founder Gigny Mckenner (Gene McKenna) will join Groupon with an unknown number of Uptake team members.

"Groupon has bought uptake and we are delighted to continue to build the Palo Alto engineering team, working with all-star founders and experts in the mobile and social fields." A Groupon spokeswoman said in an email.

Uptake, who uses personalized social data to help users study tourist destinations through their buddy network, Uptake CEO Li said last year that the company's technology was to study unstructured data about tourism rather than relying on clear signals like Foursquare check-in.

Groupon also has its own social tourism product, Groupon getaways, which they developed in partnership with Expedia. Groupon recently acquired several companies, including service developers Hyperpublic, Kima Labs, adku, campfire Labs and zappedy.
