The virtualization of desktop systems and servers is already widespread in the enterprise domain, but Delphix, a data management expert, wants to move further and push the full spread of database virtualization.
From a traditional standpoint, businesses need to save copies of the database for different purposes, including testing, reporting, and development. However, such extra database replicas consume and eat away valuable storage resources, which can cause a lot of trouble for technicians in the context of both budget and time shortages in the IT department.
"After you've taken care of a database, it will unknowingly derive twice times, five times times, or even 30 times times the amount of copies of the original physical database," said Delphix, vice president and general manager of Europe, Middle East and Africa, Iain Chidgey in an interview.
"If everyone's original database is only 5TB, then the business environment will need to host 150TB of http://www.aliyun.com/zixun/aggregation/13584.html" > Mass data after the 30 replication process. ”
This type of database replication also means that once a new copy appears, employees throughout the enterprise must temporarily put down their work because the databases they are involved in are not synchronized in a timely manner.
This situation raises a larger problem when developers implement application creation with information stored in the database.
Delphix's technology solves this challenge by virtualizing the data files in the database by creating a single, highly compressed copy of the original block of data, which is then passed on to the server side of the DBMS (the database management system). Each set of DBMS receives a read/write database that contains all the relevant functionality, but each new copy does not bring new storage requirements.
"Next, the Delphix server will provide a fully functional read-write database to the development team in a very space-saving way," Chidgey said.
"If you want to have a new application development system to take care of real-time data, Delphix is definitely a good choice," said Quocirca analyst Clive Longbottom in an interview. ”
"It helps development teams and organizations quickly enable new database instances," Longbottom. "This is a snapshot mechanism for an existing system, and no matter how we break it or split it, it does not have any effect on the system in operation." ”
Longbottom added: "Looking ahead, cloud computing is a mainstream technology that we can't ignore and can't avoid, and with the help of compression technology, we will have the opportunity to transfer local information to the cloud environment more easily and conveniently." ”
