Beijing time March 25 afternoon news, according to foreign media reports, the Internet Domain name Management Agency ICANN this week initially approved the Hong Kong region of China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Qatar, Tunisia and the Palestinian region using a fully local-language Internet domain name. Our mainland and Taiwan regions will need a few more months to make technical assessments, because Chinese can be written in two ways--simplified and traditional. ICANN is working on rules to make sure which script to enter an address into the same Web site. Since its inception in the 1980s, Internet domain names such as the end of ". com" have been limited to 37 characters: 10 digits, hyphens, and 26 Latin letters in English. The use of technical skills has enabled some Web sites to use other scripts, but until recently, the suffix ". com" must be used in these 37 characters. In view of the increase of non-Latin suffixes, internet users who speak Chinese, Arabic or other languages, who understand or do not understand English, will no longer have to enter Latin characters to enter the Web page. Unlike China and Taiwan, Hong Kong does not have to carry out further inspections because "Hong Kong" is the same in simplified and traditional Chinese. (Juan Zi)
