How do you choose to create a public cloud, a private cloud, or a mixed cloud?

We have to admit that all companies are migrating to the cloud, at least considering migrating to the cloud. But because there are so many factors to choose from, some companies are still trying to find a choice that works best for them.

Rick Wright, KPMG's head of global cloud innovation, says there are usually several factors to consider when choosing to create a private cloud, a public cloud, or a mixed cloud.

In his view, the company must consider the importance of the application of the plan to cloud migration, management issues, the level of service required, the use of the workload, and how the integrated application should be better integrated with other factors such as the company's other functions.

Pharmaceutical companies should choose the internal private cloud, because restricting the industry has some vital needs and is subject to strict rules. Although in a private cloud, these companies are installing their own server and storage hardware, they can use the volume detection or deployment of new applications to flexibly allocate workloads between servers.

On the other hand, he says, there are companies that need to quickly provide services to the market and have few regulatory hurdles, and that the data used is not necessarily tied to other businesses. These businesses are turning to public cloud solutions, such as Amazon Web Services. After signing the contract, users can immediately use computing, storage, and other services through the online portal.

Cloud security remains a thorny issue for the executive, but the issue has fallen markedly in importance, Wright said. This suggests that for many companies, security issues are no longer the focus of their consideration of public cloud services.

In companies that are or are preparing to deploy a public cloud, half of it executives think security is one of the most important challenges, according to KPMG, and only 42% of business executives hold that view. Compared to last year, the proportion of people worried about cloud security has fallen sharply.

KPMG recently surveyed 800 senior executives worldwide, and found that 41% said they were using or planning to use some type of private cloud, and 30% said they were or were preparing to use the public cloud.

Ultimately, most sectors, including those with strict regulations and largely unregulated sectors, may have a shift to a hybrid cloud.

"What we're seeing now is that most companies will be using a hybrid model," Wright said. ”

The hybrid cloud consists of public and private cloud services. For example, a business unit might run applications primarily on a private cloud, but rely on public cloud services to measure usage.

No matter what cloud the business unit decides to use, one thing is clear: they will migrate to the cloud. In the KPMG survey, 81% of respondents said their companies were evaluating cloud services, planning cloud implementations or implementing cloud policies, including public and private clouds. Only less than 10% of respondents said they did not intend to use the cloud immediately.
