NPIV Introduction

N_port ID Virtualization (NPIV) is a virtualization technology that is applied to storage area network (SAN) Fibre Channel. SAN network mainly includes servers, fiber-optic switches, storage devices, etc., communication between the devices in the network, through the corresponding ports, in the NPIV environment, need to understand several basic concepts.

N_port is a port on a SAN network that corresponds to a server or storage node, such as a port on a server HBA card, and a destination port for a storage device.

F_port the ports in the SAN network that correspond to the fibre switches. The F_port on the switch is connected to the N_port to form the corresponding communication link.

E_port is the interface between the corresponding switch and the switch.

NPIV technology enables the physical single n_port to be virtualized out of multiple ports with a unique N_port ID (also known as Fiber Channel ID, fcid) for each port. This ID is a 24-bit address, and each N_port ID is mapped to a world Wide Port Name (WWPN). Simply put, the HBA on the server accesses the FCID via the Fibre Channel network, then registers the virtual WWPN into the network to obtain the fcid of these virtual WWPN, so that the WWPN of the SAN can be divided and the storage LUNs are carried out according to the physical Zone operation. Mappings.

Advantages of NPIV:

1 compared with traditional VSCSI mode, the Zone partition of SAN network is realized, and the storage LUN mapping is more convenient and safe. Traditionally, a LUN mapped on a store is visible to all virtual machines on all physical machines, because a WWPN on the physical machine is in a Zone, and NPIV can implement a corresponding WWPN for each virtual machine, so that only the corresponding LUNs are visible.

Hardware check

Check if the fibre switch used supports NPIV features

Log on to the IBM_2498_B24 fibre switch and execute the following command:

Its Fabric OS version (v6.3.0 D) is higher than 5.3.0 to indicate that the IBM_2498_B24 fibre switch version meets the requirements.
