IBM WebSphere DataPower Option for creator optimization (AO) is designed to provide dynamic load balancing for the most demanding scenarios. By evenly distributing the load across the WebSphere DataPower device, and then intelligently routing traffic to the selected backend server based on application availability, AO improves uptime, user response time, and application server utilization.

Important benefits of AO include:

Load is distributed across multiple devices without external load balancer.

Intelligent load Balancing on back-end servers based on metadata from the application server.

Integrates IBM z/os®communications Server Sysplex distributor, which balances workloads between DataPower devices.

Support for Non-disruptive back-end application upgrades through support for application versioning. You can use a group or automatic update to promote a new version of the program.

AO is a licensed software feature that is standard on the WebSphere DataPower Edge appliance XE82, available when originally ordered, or as a websphere DataPower integration appliance, WebSphere DataPower Service Gateway XG45 device, WebSphere DataPower integration Blade xi50b and WebSphere DataPower integration Appliance for Zenterprise xi50z is available on a onsite upgradeable option. When you select the upgradeable option, once the subscription is complete, you receive an authorization feature download letter and a controlled access key for downloading the AO upgraded firmware update.

Target

In this tutorial, you will learn how to set up and demonstrate the self-balancing (SB) and smart load allocation (ILD) features of the Creator optimization (AO) licensing option for WebSphere DataPower.

Part 1th of this tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to configure and test services to benefit from the front-end SB feature in WebSphere DataPower (instead of a network load balancer).

The 2nd part of this tutorial focuses on the ILD component of the AO option. Describes how to configure load Balancer objects to dynamically assign loads in a WebSphere creator server (hereinafter referred to as creator server) member cluster.

For

It is helpful to familiarize yourself with the IBM WebSphere DataPower product Family from an administrator perspective. Some of the experience of configuring and deploying services on a device can also be helpful. In addition, IBM WebSphere creator Server knowledge, including network deployment (ND) Terminology and clustering, and the ability to deploy and monitor WEB applications are essential for a comprehensive understanding of AO functionality.

System Requirements

You will need access to privileged user access to two WebSphere XE82 devices from the XI52, XG45, xi50b/z, or XG45 families with 3.8.1 or higher firmware levels (4.0.2 or higher, XE82 on 1.0.0 or higher). Each device needs to be authorized with the AO option. In addition, you need to have a WebSphere creator Server receptacle Deployment (ND) unit with access to a deployment Manager and a chain node (Version 6.1 or later on the System admin access rights. You can also use the WebSphere creator Server Virtual Enterprise to replace it.

You will also need to download two open source tools to invoke some tests from a client workstation, two tools:

CURL, a command-line tool that uses URL syntax to send and receive files through a wide range of Internet protocols.

Apachebench (AB) tool, which is bundled with the standard Apache source code release.

Duration

It is planned to take at least four (4) hours to complete this tutorial. If you are unfamiliar with certain tasks or other requirements, such as network configuration parameters or product binaries that have not yet been introduced, you may need more time.

1th part. Configuring the device's self-balancing feature

To enable DataPower devices to participate in front-end self balancing, they need to be authorized. To verify AO authorization, you can complete the following steps for each device:

Log on to the WebSphere DataPower WebGui as a privileged user and navigate to Status > System > Device Features. You can also open this menu by typing device features in the search box.

Verify that Option for creator optimization support is available and enabled, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1. Device Features

For each device, you need to pick a network interface to set the self balance. It is common practice to select the same interface name, such as Eth11, on each device.

Starting with the first device, browse to receptacle > Interface > Ethernet Interface, and select an active network interface that you want to enable self balancing.

Switch to the Standby Control tab and click Add.

Specify the unique Group number and a value greater than 20 that are not currently in use within your network to prevent conflicts with network routers and switches. This information is generally available from your network administrator and needs to be consistent on both devices.

Use the virtual IP address (VIP) that you provide as an abstraction for a virtualized IP to transfer traffic to all devices in the standby group. Please note that the VIP must be on the same subnet as the device's real IP address and must maintain the same IP for two devices.
