Hewlett-Packard yesterday announced a recall of 70,000 laptop batteries with hidden security concerns, including 35,000 in the Asia Pacific region. This group of laptop batteries, which could cause fires due to overheating, was sold between August 2007 and March 2008, involving 21 models of notebooks. Hewlett-Packard China said yesterday that the affected users could be replaced with a free notebook battery after detection, but did not disclose the specific amount involved. China's Hewlett-Packard information Products group related to the responsible person said that these batteries need to recall the reason is the existence of "internal short-circuit" security risks. Earlier reports of two incidents in the media show that HP's laptop battery overheating caused the fire. HP did not disclose which battery company the batteries came from. Hewlett-Packard announced yesterday on the official website the model of the notebook that involved the recall and replacement plan, and how to view the model. HP China says it will notify the affected users in the form of letters, emails, and store announcements. Users can also call HP Customer hotline for consultation. PC makers have had several similar battery recalls before, the most recent being the last to recycle 100,000 Sony batteries from overheating, and HP sold 32,000 laptops that use the batteries.
