HP builds OPENNFV new department to deploy new services through virtual machines

It has been disclosed last week that Hewlett-Packard is planning to form a new department designed to increase the flexibility of telecom operators to deploy services and to appoint Besseny Meyers, head of the network equipment business unit, Bethany Mayer, to take charge of the new department. HP wants to promote NFV services to wireless carriers at the World Mobile Conference. These operators are losing money on the impact of Third-party messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook, partly because they failed to quickly deploy new services and capabilities. These popular third-party messaging applications cost operators 32 billion of dollars in SMS services, according to Ovum, a research firm. Operators are keen to compete and make profits from SMS services. If a wireless carrier wants to provide new services to its customers, such as a new messaging feature, it needs to be reconfigured and even replaced with specialized network hardware, which is bound to go through expensive, time-consuming and laborious processes. NFV technology lets virtual machines replace hardware, and the virtual machine runs the software installed on the original hardware. If future NFV services are promoted, they can be scaled up simply by adding more virtual machines. Hewlett-Packard issued an internal notice to its employees on February 14, and Mayer will leave the old post and take charge of the new department after the successor of the network Equipment department is selected. Mayer has been responsible for network business since 2011. HP is not the only one interested in NFV. Dell is working with the Open-source technology company Red Hat on the NFV business and has teamed up to launch the CLOUDNFV project. (xi Chen)
