Sina Science and technology news Beijing time of August 20 morning, Hewlett-Packard Senior Vice President Stephen Dewitt (Stephen DeWitt) said HP plans to continue to provide technical support for webOS and continue to update the system. "webOS is not dead, and we will continue to develop, update and provide technical support to the system," DeWitt said. "DeWitt began to take charge of HP's webOS business last month. Hewlett-Packard announced this week that it would assess the future strategic options for the webOS system and stop sales of webOS devices, including related smartphones and tablets. DeWitt said HP was considering collaborating with some equipment manufacturers or providing authorization to enable other vendors to use the system in their equipment. He points out that webOS is also attractive outside the consumer market and may be able to attract interest from companies in the financial, transport and retail sectors. "The market is not just tablet computers and phones," DeWitt said. There will be many applications in different sizes and shapes, all of which require an artificial interface to the data. "Hewlett-Packard CEO Li Ai (Leo Apotheker) said this week that it would abandon the strategy announced in March this year to install the webOS system in all HP's computer products. Previously, HP has been slow to attract developers to develop applications for the webOS system. DeWitt says he hopes to attract more developers in the future. HP will adopt an open strategy to make applications available to users on a variety of devices, rather than a single device. This is different from Apple's approach. "If you want to get into Apple's ecosystem, you need to follow Apple's rules," he says. Our strategy is more open and we want to be a platform that can easily be extended to other environments, rather than a closed architecture. "If HP were to sell only the webOS mandate in the future, it would still retain control of the system," he said. But DeWitt does not rule out HP's possible sale of webOS. Frank Gillett, a Forrester analyst at Frank Guillette, said that webOS and its patents were attractive to companies such as Dell, HTC, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. If Dell wants to buy webOS, he says, it is a good time. For Asian device makers, acquiring webOS means they will have access to their operating systems. (Chu Yue)
