A Tuesday report by IDC, a market research firm, showed HP overtook IBM as the world's largest server seller in the last quarter. Data showed IBM server sales fell 10% in the last quarter. Hewlett-Packard's rise in global server market sales comes as the company's chief executive, Meg Whitman, Whitman to analysts one weeks after HP's strong growth in server sales last quarter. Just a week ago, Whitman told analysts that HP's server sales showed strong growth thanks to some of the uncertainty associated with Lenovo's 2.3 billion dollar takeover of IBM's low-end server business. Earlier this month, the US Overseas Investment Commission had approved Lenovo's deal to buy IBM's low-end servers. "We are taking advantage of some of the uncertainty that customers are having with IBM and Lenovo," Whitman said. In the fierce confrontation with IBM for the deal, we saw a significant increase in HP's winning percentage. IDC, the data show, in the second quarter of this year, HP's global server sales reached 3.2 billion units, accounting for about 25.4% of global market share, while IBM fell to the world's second, the same period, the server sales share of 23.6%. In the second quarter of this year, HP's global server sales rose 4% Year-on-year, while IBM fell 10.2% per cent year-on-year, according to data. Meanwhile, Dell remains third in the global server market, accounting for about 16.6% of global market share in the second quarter, while Oracle and Cisco are ranked fourth, accounting for 6% of global server market share. The server market is experiencing a cyclical refresh cycle as the system deploys shortly after the financial crisis, according to Matt Eastwood, general manager of IDC Enterprise platform operations. Mr. Eastwood also said the refresh cycle is expected to continue into 2015 years. IDC uses research data that covers a variety of servers, including systems to connect to networked computers. HP has been dominant in two major categories, namely low-end servers (also known as x86 systems) and blade servers. At the higher end of the server (X86 System) market, IBM is still in the first position, the revenue of this business accounts for about 69.1% of the total global revenue share. (Yue Tong)
