Recently, the Financial Times reported that IBM has developed data analysis technology to improve the treatment of traumatic brain injury, the current IBM scientists through with the University of California, Los Angeles Reagan Medical Center doctors struggling to explore, The brain swelling that leads to cognitive impairment and even death is predicted by analyzing the patient's massive data stream.

Nagui Halim, head of IBM's big data, said: "Doctors want to know if we can predict the patient's situation in the next 8-10 hours." At present, the brain sensors used in hospitals issue alarms when intracranial pressure reaches extremely dangerous levels, so that health care workers take action to remove swelling from the patient-usually by drilling holes in the brain or by removing part of the skull. IBM's current large data software is trying to identify the physiological signs that predict the patient's next few hours, through breathing-frequency data and heart rate patterns that doctors can instantly track.

Halim explains that we can make a vivid comparison of the large data technology for treating brain damage with the author of a book. Computer scientists usually analyze the data after it has been compiled-just like a keyword that scans a completed or 100 book. With the current technology, we can type, while analyzing. Halim also said that future scientists can predict patients ' future status by studying patient's medical records and putting their health patterns together-just as they can predict the contents of a book when they are not in the books by understanding how an author shapes characters and storylines in his previous writings.

"You may not remember someone else's name or what you just ate," said Susan Connors, head of the American Association for Brain Injury Therapy. "Doctors have long been looking for better ways to predict swelling to give patients timely treatment." IBM has made a step forward in this regard and has finally achieved a breakthrough. But Texas's brain injury expert Brent Masel said: "This is not a cure for brain damage, but it has played a great role in the recovery of brain damage." This makes our treatment more precise and meaningful. ”

In addition to the UCLA project, IBM has worked with three other universities to apply large data technologies to cutting-edge healthcare:

1. At the Ontario Polytechnic University, the neonatal intensive care specialist is using IBM's large data software to analyse the unique information data of more than 1000 messages per second from preterm infants or around sensors and instrumentation. IBM's large data software allows caregivers to discover progress and take action on life-threatening infections 24 hours in advance, compared with standard treatments.

2. At the State University of New York, Buffalo, a research leader in multiple sclerosis, IBM's Big Data technology was used to study more than 2000 genetic and environmental factors that lead to multiple sclerosis. The software allows researchers to analyze medical records, test results, MRI scans and patient satisfaction questionnaires immediately rather than days.

3. Medical researchers at the Brigham Women's Hospital in Harvard Medical School are also using IBM's large data technology, which they use to study the effects of prescription drugs for 10 million patients. Researchers are creating new research methods to analyze massive amounts of data to identify the drug risks of millions of patients.
