IBM buys NoSQL Cloud service provider Cloudant

February 25 News, according to foreign media reports, IBM will acquire NoSQL Cloud database service provider Cloudant, for its cloud services portfolio to add more strength.

Cloudant is a private enterprise in Boston, offering a managed version of the Apache COUCHDB open-source software data store. The company's own version of the database software named "Bigcouch", can be run on multiple servers, for the foreground application to create and maintain a large number of data and fast data storage methods.

Companies in the gaming, services, manufacturing, online education, retail and healthcare industries use Cloudant services.

IBM plans to use Bigcouch services for its large data and analysis products and services. IBM will also integrate these services into the Mobile Application development tool portfolio called "MobileFirst".

COUCHDB was developed by former Lotus Notes developer Damian Katz (Damien Katz) in 2005 and received financial support from IBM for its further development. The Open-source Soft project was accepted by the Apache Software Foundation as a top-tier project in 2008.

Cloudant has already run its services on IBM's SoftLayer Global Cloud platform. IBM bought SoftLayer 1.2 billion dollars last September and pledged to upgrade the system with 1.2 billion dollars to include IBM's 40 data centers around the world.

IBM announced at the annual Pulse meeting in Las Vegas in Monday that it would migrate many software products and all cloud services to SoftLayer.

IBM plans to complete the acquisition of Cloudant by the end of April. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. After the deal is completed, Cloudant will become part of IBM's new information and Analysis Division. This department is within the IBM Software and Systems division led by IBM Senior Vice President Bob Picassino (Bob Picciano).
